The history of Lake Shikotsuko dates back about 40,000 years ago.
Its history began with the eruption of the Shikotsuko volcano.
The eruption created a large depression in the land. Then, over a long period of time, rain and water accumulated and formed the lake.
Lake Shikotsuko is also known as the northernmost lake in Japan that does not freeze over in winter.
The lake has a circumference of about 40 km, which is about the same distance as Tokyo Yamanote train’s Line. It also has a maximum depth of 360 meters, which is almost as deep as Tokyo Tower. Another feature of the lake is its low occurrence of animal and vegetable plankton. The low plankton content results in very high lake transparency. Because of these characteristics of the water quality, the lake was ranked first in Japan for 11 consecutive years in the "Water Quality Survey: Japanese Lakes and Marshes divisions, conducted annually by the Ministry of the Environment.
The word “Lake ShikotsuKo Blue”. This is an appropriate word to describe the beauty of this lake. The very clear water of Lake Shikotsuko, when illuminated by the sun, turns a wonderful clear blue that attracts many people.

Thanks to the clear waters of Lake Shikotsuko, the local nature also attracts people. The moss cave, which can be called a corridor ”Kokeno Domon” created by nature. Mountains such as Mt. Eniwadake overlooking the lake and Mt. Tarumaezan in the distance also enhance the beauty of Lake Shikotsu.
